<p>Orthorexia is a condition not recognized by many as a disorder but only as a type of obsessive-compulsive disease. This is because it doesn&acirc;t pose a serious danger to the afflicted person unlike anorexia or bulimia. The name orthorexia is from the Greek word that literally means &acirc;correct diet&acirc;. It was first used in 1997 by Dr. Steven Bratman to describe people who have a completely healthy diet. </p>
<p>Some experts say it&acirc;s like a disorder disguised as a virtue. Cases of orthorexia can often start when a person begin a diet in order to lose weight or avoid unhealthy food for the purpose of preventing serious diseases. It is characterized by an obsession to eat only healthy foods. People who have this condition are not aware that they are orthorexics and that food is gradually taking over their life. It can be anything from noting calories and researching healthy food preparations to thinking how foods in restaurants are prepared. They don&acirc;t feel that they need any professional help and it&acirc;s fine with them not to eat what most people consider as normal foods because those kinds of food are viewed by them as harmful. They are the ones who decide what right foods to eat and they feel superior over those who eat junk or processed foods. </p>
<p>Orthorexics may avoid eating foods considered as unhealthy like those with preservatives, food additives, fats and excessive sugar. Examples of foods often avoided by orthorexics are animal products and processed foods. They favor fresh or natural foods like vegetables and fruits. They also believe that their eating habits are healthy but they&#8217;re actually not. The body also needs the nutrients found in some of the foods deemed unhealthy by orthorexics. Long-term results of this condition can lead to malnutrition or deficiency in certain nutrients because of their strict and limited diet. </p>
<p>They allot a considerably big part of their time just thinking about food such as planning, buying and preparing meals. A lavish dinner may be prepared by them but they will not really enjoy the food. They employ a very strict discipline in their eating which can lead to too much thinking of a food&#8217;s consequence on their health. Surprisingly, this kind of eating condition is more often found in men than in women. </p>
<p>Furthermore, orthorexics tend to shy away from socializing with other people because of their preferred eating habits. Imagine, the most common way of socializing with people and forming a bond with friends is eating. People view eating as a form of celebration and of showing gratitude to others. This is where orthorexics get lost as they consider even the slightest violation of their healthy eating regime as a sin so they avoid such compromising situations. For them, building relationships is not as important as eating right, especially if being with others will just influence them to violate their diet. Even a single slip-up like joining a group in eating pizza for a celebration can result to their great depression and chastise. </p>
<p>So, even if orthorexics doesn&acirc;t pose harm in the way other eating disorders do, it can damage the personality and overall quality of life by isolating the person afflicted.</p>

Managing your diet is very important as the slightest change will result in a number of health drawbacks and complications. Experts have promoted that so-called diabetic diet. But, most of the people would ask the million-dollar question, &acirc;What really is this diabetic diet?&acirc; </p>
<p>If you have diabetes, your body cannot make or properly use insulin. This leads to high blood glucose, or sugar, levels in your blood. Healthy eating helps to reduce your blood sugar. It is a critical part of managing your diabetes, because controlling your blood sugar can prevent the complications of diabetes.</p>
<p>Thus, there is a need to choose your food wisely and carefully. The best way to do this is to devise a healthy diet plan where you can scientifically plot which food groups should be the most priority and the least priority. There is a general rule for this. Fruits and vegetables proven to increase insulin levels should be given a rightful place in the diet for Type 1 diabetes patients. This is done because diabetes is still on its onset and preventive measures can still be done. However, among adults who have Type 2 diabetes, the focus is more on achieving the ideal, normal weight and blood glucose levels. </p>
<p>There are also recommended amounts of carbohydrates or fats, you must refer to nutrition guide tables that your doctor may have given. You should also take note of nutrition facts and labels from the groceries that you bought. Simply add the calorie and carbohydrate content (if any) in each product and try to found if they meet or exceed in the calorie requirement of a particular meal. </p>
<p>It is said that carbohydrates from our diet come from starches, fruits and milk. Some vegetables contain some carbohydrates but they are mostly made of fiber that could aid in digestion. Meat does not contain carbohydrates but naturally contains fat. Vegetables are more advisable because they contain complex carbohydrates which cannot easily be broken down during metabolism. As a consequence, they do not raise the glucose levels abruptly. Simple carbohydrates from breads and sweets are made of simple carbohydrates that do not take a longer time to be converted into glucose, thus could affect glucose levels in such a short period of time. </p>
<p>One should be mindful which food has simple or complex carbohydrates. It would also help if you avoid sweets (cakes, mayonnaise-based salads and chocolates) in both meals and snacks. Always serve food in small and medium servings. If you crave on something that is prohibited, eat some of it in small amounts or find other food alternatives that can still satisfy your taste buds. </p>
<p>Also limit your alcohol and caffeine intake. Alcohol, when broken down, will produce fat and glucose components that, again, can raise blood glucose levels and may also affect other organs like the heart and the liver. </p>
<p>Remember, dieting will not be successful without a positive outlook and exercise. Always think positive. Stress is bad for the health. <p>Small Frequent Meals</p>
<p>To fuel up metabolism, it is recommended to eat small frequent meals. It is ideal that large meals such as breakfast, lunch, and supper should be divided into smaller meals.  In other words, in-between snacks are to be avoided when large meal comes. By having small frequent meals, metabolic rate is in constant because it senses the continuous flow of food. This campaign for fighting obesity makes people easily give in to different diet plans that guarantee faster results.  However, only few diet plans prove to be effective.  As time goes by, people tend to get sick of trying out different products. Thus it is just right to stick to the best diet plan.   </p>
<p>The popular, South Beach diet is probably one of the best diet plans ever formulated.  It started in Florida and was originally designed for obese patients.  As oppose to magic diet, it aims to lose weight in a healthier way.  It basically teaches healthy eating habits and promotes self-discipline while losing weight.</p>
<p>It was formulated by a cardiologist and has a systematic way of enabling the body to lose weight.  It basically works in phases, every phase has its own procedure and goals to meet.  </p>
<p>First phase- The program still allows protein-rich food intake but there would be restriction on carbohydrates. In terms of food intake, this is the strictest phase however it guarantees a loss of approximately 8 to 12 pounds.  First phase would last in just two weeks yet it produces dramatic results. Unlike other diet plans this phase allows satisfaction of cravings.  It is fine to eat any food except carbohydrate which is  found on breads, cakes, pastries, and even alcohol.  However, it will be returned in the second phase as there would be no deprivation of food cravings anymore.  This phase promotes eating at least six times a day.</p>
<p>Second phase- Carbohydrate is now introduced to the diet.  However, some portion of these carbohydrate-rich foods must be on minimal serving.  This time, there would be changes on the way of eating.  If in phase one, food cravings lead to indulgence, here, there are still food cravings but lesser indulgence.  After two weeks on phase one, the nagging cravings for foods are already gone.  This stage is not as dramatic as phase one, though. This phase constantly loses weight by one to two pounds weekly.  It all depends on the individual&acirc;s needs. This phase lasts until desired weight is attained.</p>
<p>Third and last phase- This program is referred to as a life-long commitment in maintaining weight.  At this phase, self-discipline on healthy eating is already instilled in the person.  There would be no food deprivation, wines, breads, and desserts are all allowed.</p>
<p>South Beach diet really doesn&acirc;t deprive any food cravings.  In fact, satisfying the nagging cravings is part of the plan.  The idea behind these principles is the fact that when food deprivation happens, healthy eating will not be instilled up to the third phase.  It would only lead to bingeing because cravings kept nagging. Psychologically, it is hard to fight this.  Thus, the program requires eating at least six times daily.  As these small frequent meals will lessen cravings as the body reacts differently when eating bigger portion of meals.</p>
<p>Its healthy way of losing weight makes the south beach diet popular among overweight people.  The dramatic results of weight loss lasts for long time yet healthy enough to fight hypertension, diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.  No wonder, south beach diet is highly recommended by most experts.</p>

<p>There may be any number of reasons for this. Maybe it&#8217;s because junk food is so easy to find. Maybe it&#8217;s a busy schedule that doesn&#8217;t give us enough time to eat right. Maybe it&#8217;s the stress of the modern world that causes the problem. Regardless of the the causes of your unhealthy eating habits, you can turn that around at any time by adopting healthy eating habits.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to wait. You don&#8217;t have to spend a fortune on the latest fad diet. You can start right away by being mindful of the food you eat. Remember, everything you consume is going to have some effect on your body. The only question is if that effect is good or bad. Studies have shown that subjects who paid attention to what they ate, started to eat better. They weren&#8217;t even aware that they were making healthier choices. It was almost as if paying attention to the food they ate flipped a switch that caused them to start eating better. And you can do the same thing. </p>
<p>One of the benefits of trying to change your eating habits is that you can do it at the pace that&#8217;s best for you. Remember that you are in this for the long haul, so if you want to make a few small changes at a time, then that&#8217;s perfectly acceptable. You know what&#8217;s best for you. No matter how you go about it, it&#8217;s much better to make changes that are going to stick and see more steady results. Sure, you could make a lot of changes and be able to see some drastic results in short amount of time may seem fantastic, but if you find it too difficult and then go back to your old ways, then it&#8217;s not really worth it. </p>
<p>A good rule of thumb is to eat foods that are as close to their natural source as possible. For example, it&#8217;s better to eat corn on the cob, than it is to eat it ground up, deep fried, salted and flavored. That sounds logical, yet how many people choose to eat corn chips instead of fresh corn on a daily basis. And that&#8217;s only one example. If you could make this one little change, you would be adopting one of the best healthy eating habits.</p>
<p>Another good healthy eating habit is to make better choices at the grocery store. To do this, simply compare two similar foods that you like to eat, then choose the one that&#8217;s healthier. However, don&#8217;t do this only once, but rather every time you go shopping. Think of it as a contest and try to beat your previous record. Over time your diet will improve, and you will feel a whole lot better to boot!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Maybe you are already at an ideal weight and feel really good on a regular basis. If so, you may think there is no need to concern yourself with a healthy eating plan. Who knows, maybe you&#8217;re one of those fortunate souls who naturally eats the best foods, and you don&#8217;t have to spend any time worrying about what you eat. Perhaps you seem to be able to eat anything you want and have nothing but perfect health to show for it. </p>

<p>You may be like the vast majority of us and have to actually give some consideration to the foods you eat. While most of us don&#8217;t really give all that much thought to a healthy eating plan, we really should. To be fair, you probably do think about the food you eat from time to time. For instance, it&#8217;s quite common to eat a lot of junk food and then try to compensate by eating healthier for the rest of the day. It&#8217;s good that you&#8217;re trying, but this type of behavior doesn&#8217;t quite qualify as an eating plan. What you need is a diet that looks at the bigger picture.</p>
<p>The majority of us don&#8217;t really know how much sugar we&#8217;re taking in, for example. We also tend to eat a lot more fat than we&#8217;re aware of. Furthermore, we tend to not think of being on a healthy eating plan at all, unless there is a good reason. Needing to lose weight for an upcoming event (wedding, beach season, class reunion, etc.), or health concerns (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure) are common reasons.</p>
<p>We only start to think about eating healthier when stuff like this happens. The problem is that it can be too little, too late. It may be possible to repair ill health through proper diet, but once the damage is done, there is no guarantee that it can be fixed. It will also take more effort to make it work. But had we been eating well from the start, there is a very good chance that these ill effects would never have happened. Therefore, it makes a lot more sense to start a healthy eating plan as soon as possible.</p>
<p>If you are in good health now, you could still be at risk if you don&#8217;t get your diet in check. There could be environmental factors that contribute to bad health over the long term. A family history of certain diseases could also increase your risk. The funny thing is that some people use these risk factors as an excuse to eat nothing but garbage. They figure they&#8217;re going to get these diseases anyway, so that gives them a free ticket to eat whatever they want. That&#8217;s sad. The truth is that there are no guarantees that a healthy eating plan will be enough to overcome these risk factors, but it will decrease your risk substantially. So, it only makes sense to eat well. Plus, it is never too late to start.</p>

Their reasons range from &quot;just wanting to&quot; to trying to treat a deadly disease, from moral reasons to wanting to lose weight. Regardless of the reason, you should research health and nutrition before deciding on a healthy eating program that is best for you. Doing the proper research will not only point you in the right direction for foods you should eat, but it will also steer you away from the foods you should avoid. </p>
<p>One thing you need to watch out for is a lack of balance. For example, the market is filled with diet plans that eliminate whole categories of food. While it makes sense to reduce the level of saturated fat you consume, getting rid of carbohydrates is a questionable practice at best. It is okay to eat fat, carbohydrates and protein; in fact, you should be wary of any so-called healthy eating program that claims otherwise.</p>
<p>When it comes to fat, you will want to limit saturated fats, and try to eliminate man-made trans fats completely. (There are naturally occurring trans fats, and these aren&#8217;t nearly as bad as their hydrogenated counterparts.) Your best bet is to have polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, though you don&#8217;t want to go overboard on them, either.</p>
<p>Carbohydrates have received a lot of attention in recent years. This is due, largely, to some popular diets that avoided them. Yes, it is possible to lose weight on a low-carb diet, but there may be risks involved. Also, such a diet wouldn&#8217;t really be considered a long-term healthy eating program because of the lack of balance. However, not all carbohydrates are created equally. You should limit the simple carbs found in white bread, white rice, and sugar; and replace them with the complex carbs found in whole grains, vegetables and some fruit.</p>
<p>Protein can be tricky because a lot of sources are high in saturated fat. Beef, for example, is high in protein, but a lot of cuts are high in saturated fat. Chicken, on the other hand, has some cuts that are higher in fat than others, so choose white meat to stay on the safe side. Perhaps the best of source of protein is beans (pinto, black, garbanzo, navy, and so on). The are high in protein and fiber, and are also very low in fat.</p>
<p>A healthy eating program doesn&#8217;t mean you can never enjoy your favorite foods again, far from it. First, there are plenty of healthy alternatives for most foods. Second, the key is to enjoy such foods in moderation, as an occasional treat. If you eat less of the unhealthy foods, and more of the healthy foods, then you will be headed in the right direction. But if you can&#8217;t have the foods you enjoy, then there is too great of a risk that you will simply go back to an unhealthy diet, and that wouldn&#8217;t do you much good at all.</p>
