<p>Through modernity of our age, the gap between the east and the west has begun to shrink. Western ideas, invention and philosophy have been integrated to the lives of the people of the east. The once bizarre practices of the east are now being put into practice by westerners. This fact is especially true nowadays, where anything that comes from the ancient practice of the east are considered cool. One such practice is Yoga. </p>
<p>Yoga is a traditional mental and physical discipline which was created in India. The primary goal in practicing of Yoga is improving ones health. Practicing Yoga would create a huge difference in a person. A person&acirc;s health, physical and mental constitution would dramatically improve by using yoga. </p>
<p>Due to its overall benefits, it is of no surprise why many celebrities practice yoga. Different celebrities such as, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Anniston, and Madonna have all admitted that they are practicing Yoga. Most of them are saying that by practicing Yoga, they have improved their strength, their concentration, it tones their bodies and most of all it calms their minds. These claims have not gone unnoticed by the public that is why Yoga is becoming more and more popular to the general populace. </p>
<p>As popular as it is, it does not mean that it is just a fad. Yoga does have great benefits, not only to the body but also to the mind and soul of the person practicing yoga. The physique of a person would change by practicing Yoga, as Yoga sculpts the body. The poses used in yoga are designed to tone the muscles making it firm. It also increases the flexibility of the body, which is often overlooked.  </p>
<p>The positions used in yoga also optimizes the use of the joints, this would mean that the joints, ligaments and tendons are well lubricated. Because of this the body would be able to move more easily, and who knows maybe more gracefully. Aside from the things mentioned above, Yoga also serves an excellent exercise for detoxification. This would result in the giving a person more energy, more zest in life and probably make him look younger.</p>
<p>Admittedly, Yoga is not the best exercise for losing weight fast. It is an exercise that is gradual and not fast paced that is why calories are not burned that fast in Yoga. But as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, Yoga may not be the answer for fast weight loss but it is the way to have a great health. Great health is not just feeling healthy it is also about looking healthy. Yoga is a great way to tone the muscles of the body, which makes the muscles which has become limp, saggy and weak to become strong and firm. This makes it the excellent choice for people who want to lose weight without its after effects, like excess and saggy skin or any total consumption of energy. Yoga exercises every aspect of a person, his physical, mental and spiritual being.</p>

Each meal will include half a grapefruit which is where it gets the name &#8216;grapefruit diet&#8217;.  Although the diet is not actually endorsed by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, the name of the Mayo Clinic 3 Day Diet still lives on.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the three main meals of the Mayo Clinic 3 day diet.</p>
<p>Breakfast &#8211; For breakfast each morning you will have a black tea or coffee, half a grapefruit and bread with some protein.  For the bread and protein you could have toast with egg, toast with cheese or toast with peanut butter.</p>
<p>Lunch &#8211; lunch will also include protein and bread.  Some examples of lunch could be toast with a boiled egg, toast with 1/2 cup of tuna or cottage cheese on crackers.  You can also have a black tea or coffee with lunch.</p>
<p>Dinner &#8211; dinner is the most substantial meal of the day with this diet.  Day 1 dinner includes 3 oz lean turkey, 1 cup of carrots, 1 cup of green beans, 1 apple and 1 cup of vanilla ice-cream.  Day 2 dinner consists of 2 beef franks, 1 cup of cabbage or broccoli, 1/2 cup of carrots, 1/2 a banana and 1/2 cup of vanilla ice-cream.  Day 3 dinner includes 1 cup of tuna, 1 cup of cauliflower, 1 cup of carrots, 1 cup of melon and 1/2 cup of ice-cream.</p>
<p>Every meal should include 1/2 a grapefruit or 4 oz. of grapefruit juice.</p>
<p>The key to success with this diet plan is that you must drink at least 32 ounces of water a day.</p>
<p>There are a lot of people that swear by this diet and have said you can lose 6 points in the three days of the diet.  Here are some of the reasons why this diet is so effective.</p>
<p>1. The number of calories consumed is extremely restricted.  Even though the diet includes ice-cream every day you are still only eating around 1200 calories a day.</p>
<p>2. This diet helps to flush out your system and help you to lose a lot of water weight.</p>
<p>3. This is not a permanent weight loss.  This is a fast weight loss and if you go right back to your usual eating habits as soon as you finish the 3 days then you will put the weight back on.</p>
<p>So what is the point of dieting for 3 days if you are just going to put it back on?  This diet is great if you have an event coming up that you want to lose a few pounds for.  If you have a wedding, school reunion or want to fit into your skinny jeans to go to a concert, then this diet can help you to do that.</p>
<p>Although grapefruit is a vital part of the Mayo Clinic 3 day diet, there is no proof that it has any magical weight loss qualities.  Not everyone likes grapefruit and some people will substitute it for orange during the diet.</p>
<p>Grapefruit does however have 6 grams of fiber in half a grapefruit so when you are eating 3 servings of it a day then you are getting 18 out of the 25 grams of recommended daily fiber.  Diets that are high in fiber will help to flush out the system and assist with weight loss.  Grapefruit juice though does not have any fiber.</p>
<p>The Mayo Clinic 3 day diet can also be useful to kick-start a diet and give you a fast weight loss to begin your weight loss journey and when you finish the 3 days on this diet you can then move onto a healthy eating plan to lose more weight in a slower time period. Further, when you lose a few pounds using them (instead of a healthy, moderately paced weight loss plan) you almost always tend to put the weight back on. There&#8217;s nothing &quot;long term&quot; about a fast weight loss diet. These type diets aren&#8217;t meant to be used for long-haul fat loss maintenance. They are simply &quot;quick fixes&quot; intended for those who only need to lose a few pounds.</p>
<p>This is why you will often hear these types of diets referred to as &quot;fad diets.&quot; A few examples of fad diets are: the Cabbage Soup diet, the 3-Day diet, the 7-Day diet, the Grapefruit diet, the Atkins diet, and there are many, many more. None of these, however, are meant to be used long-term for losing weight. In fact, continuing either of them could produce serious health problems later on, like: dehydration and loss of muscle. There are more possible risks, but this article isn&#8217;t about scaring anyone. Instead, we&#8217;ll talk about when using a &quot;fast diet&quot; can be O.K..</p>
<p>Before we get to it, however, let me say that using fast diets to lose weight fast should be undertaken for short-term quick weight loss only under the guidance of a qualified physician  of which I am not. Always consult with your doctor first. Now, with that said, the only time a fast diet might be okay is when you&#8217;ve got less than ten pounds to lose (preferably no more than 5 to 7 pounds)  and you&#8217;ll be going back to a nutritionally sound, healthy diet and exercise plan immediately after losing the weight.</p>
<p>Here are some tips for staying healthy while dieting:</p>
<p>1. Drink lots of water. There are no calories in water, and your body needs plenty of fluids to properly burn off fat anyway, so you&#8217;ll agree this kinda makes sense.</p>
<p>2. Drink an 8 ounce glass of water before you eat. You&#8217;ll feel full faster, and won&#8217;t want to eat as much food.</p>
<p>3. Use a small plate and eat slowly. You&#8217;ll feel full faster and won&#8217;t eat as much.</p>
<p>4. Be active. Inactivity doesn&#8217;t help burn fat or calories, so get up off the couch and go outside for a walk, or jog. It doesn&#8217;t take a lot of stressful exercise to burn extra calories, but activity is required.</p>
<p>A final bit of advice before you go: remember that fast diets are not meant to be used for a long time. It&#8217;s better to eat right and exercise than put yourself in a position of wanting or needing to lose weight fast. If you need to lose three pounds before prom, or your brother&#8217;s niece&#8217;s wedding, maybe. But for long term weight loss (if you plan to keep off the weight you lose) fast weight loss diets are too stressful on the body to keep up  and may seriously jeopardize your health.</p>

This type of diet could cause you to become dehydrated and also possibly send your body into a state of shock, which is harmful both mentally and physically.</p>
<p>Weigh the risks versus benefits of any diet plan very carefully before making your decision. Your health and even your life depend on your making informed, smart, reasonable diet choices when you are attempting to lose weight. The most important bit of advice one can give is this: don&#8217;t try to rush it. Fad diets such as the grapefruit diet for example, may work only up to a point. When you have lost the weight and the diet is done, you go back to the same way of eating and what happens? The weight comes back and if you are not careful you may just try to make up for lost time and add on a few more pounds.</p>
<p>If you only have a few pounds to lose then by all means try one of the many fast weight loss diets available so you can get into that dress for the wedding. But, if you have a lot of weight to lose you will need to make some lifestyle changes to get to your ideal weight. </p>
<p>Take a minute to write down your weight loss goals. Keeping track of what you eat in a journal will let you see what you are putting in your body so if it needs to be changed you can change it. Writing in a journal everyday is very effective in helping you lose weight.</p>
<p>Learn about food. When you figure out how many calories are in what you eat you will be able to put meals together that are nutritionally balanced and satisfying. Knowing what the right numbers are helps a lot too.</p>
<p>You can figure out how many calories you need in a day by calculating your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, or you can simply make up a meal plan that has enough food to equal 1500 calories or so.</p>
<p>Learning to eat differently may take some practice and careful planning. When I tell you that you need to eat small meals throughout your day you are going to say you do not have the time to do that because you are at work. well then, I will say that yes you can with some precise planning.</p>
<p>You are going to start taking your lunch and snacks to work with you. Stop wasting money and gaining weight by eating out when you are at work. Save your wallet and your waistline by buying an insulated lunch box and healthy food to put in it. </p>
<p>Now you need to figure out what to put in it. Well, how about a 6 ounce container of yogurt and some carrot sticks. With an 8 ounce glass of water that is a great snack for the middle of the morning. For your lunch, why not have a sandwich made of lean turkey breast with some light mayo and lettuce and a cup of grapes or some baked chips. Don&#8217;t forget the pickle on the side! There are a lot of things you can do to make sure you eat small meals throughout your day. </p>
<p>There are countless combinations of foods for snacks and meals. Get creative, try some new things, you might find you have a broader range of foods you like therefore giving yourself even more options. Do not forget to pack enough food for two snacks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.</p>
<p>Do your best to drink enough water during the day, too. The more the better. Stay away from pop and caffeinated beverages like coffee. Caffeine has a drying effect on the body and can contribute to dehydration. Drink lots of water. A good way to figure out how much you should drink is divide what you weigh by half and drink that amount in ounces of water everyday. Or you can start by striving to drink 8 &#8211; 8 ounce glasses of water each day. It is just easier that way.</p>
<p>If you do start one of the fast weight loss diets and there are a lot of restrictions to the diet you may need to take a supplement to get the  vitamins and minerals you need.</p>

What you may not have seen or heard is that it&#8217;s best (and possibly easier, too!) to do the weight loss first, and muscle building after. You see, before you can build up your muscles, you have to ditch the excess body fat. So while you may see both processes touted together by your favorite exercise or body-building celebrities, losing weight and gaining muscle really is more of a two-step process.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll start with losing weight (or rather, body fat), and why you should concentrate your efforts on this step first. By losing the extra body fat first (which is the &quot;true goal&quot; for weight loss), through healthy eating and moderate exercise, your muscles begin to build tone so that once you are ready to start the muscle-building phase your muscles are in a lot better shape for it. I read somewhere that losing weight is about creating a &quot;calorie deficit&quot; and I believe that&#8217;s a good way to put it. In plain English, however, what it means is to lose fat, you need to burn off more calories than you take in each day.</p>
<p>How do you create a &quot;calorie deficit?&quot; You do it by manipulating and maintaining a low calorie diet and light to moderate exercise plan. Don&#8217;t even think about trying those &quot;fad/fast weight loss diets&quot; either, because most of those are unhealthy and potentially harmful. Not to mention most people who use them and lose some pounds usually gain back what they lost and more. You want to create a long-term healthy eating and exercise plan so when the fat is gone, it doesn&#8217;t come back! So now you know how to take care of step one of your plan to lose weight and gain muscle: create a &quot;calorie deficit&quot; to burn off the fat.</p>
<p>Step two is all about building muscle. How does one build muscle? You do it through strength and endurance training that focuses on working specific muscle groups in each training session. </p>
<p>Strength training generally involves the use of weights, but you will also want to do things like sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups&#8230; and these training exercises can be done anywhere because the weight you&#8217;ll be using is your own body weight! Still, free weights are going to come in handy for those other muscle-building reps you&#8217;ll be doing, like squats, bench presses, and curls. For maximum effect and minimum possible damage, schedule your muscle-building workouts for 30 to 45 minutes a day, three days a week.</p>
<p>The main thing to remember when you start on your quest to lose weight and gain muscle is until excess body fat is gone, you&#8217;ll just be gaining tone. After you&#8217;ve burned off the fat, then you&#8217;ll be ready to build muscle mass, and your body will be in better condition for doing so if you concentrate on burning the fat first.</p>

Regular exercise will help increase muscle tone and increase endurance so you will be able to spend more time walking, running or just playing with your kids a couple of times a week after dinner. So have that conversation and do what your doctor says is OK to do.</p>
<p>Cardiovascular exercises strengthen the most important muscle of the body, your heart. Your lungs benefit, too by being able to function better. Cardiovascular exercises consist of walking or running on a treadmill, using a stair stepper, elliptical machine or stationary bike and getting your heart rate up to a maximum level and sustaining that rate for up to 20-30 minutes. </p>
<p>Another type of fast weight loss exercises is strength training or weight lifting. Strength training consists of using exercise machines and free weights either at home or in a gym. Weight machines are usually the best to start out on because they offer some stability  and help prevent injuries. Free weights can be introduced to you regimen slowly after your core strength has improved. </p>

There is also a new theory out there that states if you do only one set with a heavier weight and take your muscles to fatigue, (which means you could not do one more rep even if you wanted to), you will get even faster results.</p>
<p>Do yourself a favor, stop jumping on every new diet that some new celebrity has endorsed, they never work. The reason that celebrity looks the way they look is because they can afford a personal trainer who literally kicks their butt every single day. What does work is eating healthy, paying close attention to what you are putting in your mouth and getting regular exercise. Make it a routine. Make an appointment with yourself everyday at the same time until you can&#8217;t start or finish your day without it. You cannot afford to miss your workout.</p>
